Built up around the strawberry trade, then around the motorway
Swanwick station, right by the village, once handled a huge volume of strawberries at the height of the fruit-growing trade in the early twentieth century, though that rail-borne distribution ended in 1966. Since then, Park Gate has grown mainly through residential development from the 1980s onward, turning it into more of a commuter base within easy reach of Southampton, Portsmouth and beyond via the M27.
