A village that grew into a town on the back of the refinery
Hythe stayed a village until around the 1950s, when expansion at the nearby Fawley oil refinery brought a wave of workers needing homes nearby. That single period of growth shaped much of the town's current housing stock, and it continues to expand alongside neighbouring Dibden Purlieu today.
