Built around the railway works
Eastleigh owes its existence to the London and South Western Railway, which opened a carriage and wagon works here in 1891 and, a little later, a large motive-power depot. The town, originally known as Bishopstoke before it grew large enough to take its own name, was laid out with Victorian and Edwardian terraces in a grid pattern around the works, and much of that housing survives today.
