One of the older settlements in the area
Botley's name comes from a Saxon settlement recorded as Bottaleah, and the village received its first market charter from King Henry III in the thirteenth century, a market that, by local accounts, still runs on Wednesdays today. The Grade II-listed Market Hall and the Grade II*-listed All Saints Church, both dating from the first half of the nineteenth century, sit at the centre of a village with a genuinely long history.
A river crossing and former inland port
Botley sits at a natural crossing point of the River Hamble and was historically a small inland port, with barges once carrying coal, grain, timber and flour up and down the river. Botley Mills, thought to have operated since at least the Domesday survey, is a reminder of how much the village's economy once depended on that river trade.
Eastleigh Borough Council, not Winchester
Despite its historic ties to Winchester, Botley is administered by Eastleigh Borough Council today, worth knowing if you assume otherwise because of the village's older connections. The writer William Cobbett lived in Botley in the early nineteenth century and reportedly called it the most delightful village in the world, which gives some sense of how highly its older buildings have long been regarded.
